Theme and theory of the project: Does the unconscious categorization of the other as “white” or “black”, as “Jew” or “Muslim” take place already at the level of perception? To what extent can the analysis of perception throw light on issues related to xenophobia and racial prejudice? Is there an ethical aspect to senseperception as such? The project will attempt to respond to these questions by bringing out new dimensions in the transcendental aesthetics of phenomenology. The particular problem that will be addressed is the idea that already at the level of senseperception we are guided by repressed unconscious motivations that co-determine our understanding of ourselves, other people and the world. These motivations have (what I will call) proto-ethical consequences in that they contribute in determining what does and what does not pass over the threshold of consciousness. This notion – at the crossroads of issues of perception, aesthetics and ethics – will be examined from the point of view of phenomenology, psychoanalysis and contemporary philosophy.

With the shift from static to genetic phenomenology it becomes clear that in order to understand what perception is all about, one has to take into account the bodily and temporal processes that precede and lead up to the givenness of an object. Husserl investigated this under the heading of a “transcendental aesthetics”. In these analyses, our own previous lifehistory is seen to play an important role, since our previous actions, feelings and thoughts become sedimented within us, making up what Husserl calls our “habitus”. This dimension passively cooperates with our perceptual encounter with the world, which means that who we are and what we have done in our lives will in part contribute to our understanding of what we encounter. This has been investigated by Husserl-scholars such as Montavont (1999), Benoist (1994), Depraz (1995), Bernet (1994), Zahavi (1996), Yamaguchi (1982, 2005), Lee (1993) and Welton (2000). Husserl’s analysis of passivity is based on a phenomenology of affective force in the prepredicative sphere of lived experience. By affective force, Husserl means a tendency that stems from the world and which is directed toward the I, a tendency “whose reaction is responsive activity on the part of the I”. By yielding to the affection, the I also takes up a position, such that it “decides actively for what is enticing”. It is the step taken here that serves as a startingpoint for the project. What lies behind this “taking of position”? Does this mean that we are, in part, unconsciously determining what our perceptive gaze will allow us to encounter? The positions that we actively take and express in language and action, are traditionally speaking that for which we can be held responsible. But the relation between responsibility and taking positions also seems to obtain at the level of passivity. As has been suggested (Kaiser 1997; Drabinski 2001; Lotz 2007; Seyler 2010), this could be taken to imply that there is a primitive form of responsibility at work already in the originary perceptual field. Although the topic of ethics and responsibility of the embodied, coloured and gendered singular person in a communal setting is attracting a lot of attention at present, the project will focus on the idea of a proto-ethics of perception as an aspect within this general topic that is deemed central to it but not yet sufficiently investigated. The proto-ethics discussed here would not lend itself to morality as universal values (Kant, early Husserl), but would instead remain tied to the particularity that characterizes the “concrete subjectivity” of transcendental aesthetics (Melle 2007; Monseu 2010; Siles i Borràs 2010). Research method, additional perspectives: The method employed rests on the two major disciplines investigated – transcendental genetic phenomenology and psychoanalysis (Smith 2010) – but these are approached from perspectives informed by postcolonial issues and feminism. In order to frame a sufficiently rich theoretical framework for this problem, the project will incorporate aspects from several sources including a) the later works of Derrida (1987, 1988, 1996) and Kristeva (1989, 1996, 1997). Here the phenomenological analyses are reinterpreted from the point of view of new theoretical positions wherein psychoanalytical thought plays a central role. The connection between aisthesis (as the sphere of “touching” or of “intimacy”) and the ethico-political in a wider sense is central in these works. Also, b) the philosophy of Levinas (1967, 1978) will be approached in order to find more developed points of connection from the phenomenological analysis of passivity to the ethical sphere conceived of as the radical alterity of the other. Furthemore, c) the works of postcolonial antiracist philosophers such as Fanon (1965, 2004, 2008), Gordon (1995) and Glissant (1990) is employed, as well as feminist philosophers including Beauvoir (2011), Young (2005) and Butler (1990, 2004). The works of these thinkers will allow for different configurations of the perceptual encounter with the other as someone foreign to me, who is yet always within me. The other will appear as always beyond representation because she is a stranger to me, while at the same time being at the heart of what is innermost my own. As a result, my ability to encounter and harbour the ways in which I am other to myself, will determine how much otherness of the other I can harbour, without falling into prefabricated categories and prejudice. The project thus also encounters questions related to ethical issues in a more straightforward sense, having to do with empathy, intersubjectivity and the otherness of the other in the extended phenomenological field that these thinkers have explored. This development of transcendental aesthetics furthers our understanding of the relation between perception, embodiment and particularity beyond the resources of Husserlian phenomenology. This investigation connects directly with the “first line of inquiry” presented in the overall description of the project, in that the protoethics of perception can be shown to found higher order issues of identity and cultural prejudice. Here the philosophical and aesthetical perspectives reinforce one another, thereby making possible at once a more concrete and more detailed investigation of the perception of the other.
